Terms and Conditions
NCCAG has received a grant from NRMA Insurance which will allow for the
installation of a number of sustainability features into a home in suburban
Mullumbimby. NCCAG has a small team of volunteers working on this project,
and we will come to your home and develop a personalised sustainability
package with you.
We would like to find a household where the owners are interested in sustainability
issues, and feel eager to learn more about sustainability issues. You will
be able to participate with the NCCAG team to help install the eco-home
make-over package into your home and garden.
The winning household needs to be committed to the idea of making your
home an ‘eco-icon' to inspire the whole neighbourhood. The winners should
feel comfortable with the idea of promoting their house and sustainability
ideas to the public, and we would like other people in the neighbourhood
to be able to come to view the house at certain times over at least a one
year period, either on chosen open days, or by appointment with you.
We would like to install a small information board on your property, so
visitors can read about the eco-features in your house. This would also
display NRMA's logo, as they are sponsoring the project, and possibly some
product suppliers' logos. The information board can be fairly small and
discreet, and we will work with you to establish the best location for the
board.
We have a preference for selecting a house which is currently a fairly
typical suburban house, as we would like to show how our suburbs can be
made more sustainable. If you can find a number of households in your street
who also have an interest in living more sustainably, this will be an advantage.
Note that due to the conditions of the NRMA grant this project is open to
Mullumbimby home-owners only.
As part of the prize for the winning household, Nina Bishop will offer a
free ‘Green-me-up' course for the winners and 2 neighbours. Nina lives in
her own eco-home in Mullumbimby, and runs a business which assesses energy
use in commercial and residential buildings, and provides recommendations
for improving energy efficiency.
Vision
We hope that this project will be a catalyst for the street and neighbourhood
surrounding the chosen household to become more sustainable. Visitors to
your house will learn from seeing the eco-features first-hand, and be inspired
by your enthusiasm for how it all works.
Living sustainably can involve much more than just thinking about your
own home, for example, in this project we may be able to bring the winning
household and some neighbours who are also interested in sustainability
together, and you may be able to start thinking about how to live more sustainably
together in your street.
For example, your neighbours might like to follow your lead and install
a water tank, composting, and organic veggie garden too, and straight away
there's an opportunity for swapping veggies, sharing garden tools, getting
to know each other better – which may open up opportunities for car-pooling,
child-minding, common meals together, removing a fence here or there and
sharing your common backyard space for a larger veggie garden, fruit trees,
with common water pond, play area for the kids etc.
The possibilities for living more sustainably as a community are huge…
Potential to expand the eco-home
make-over
We would like you to have the opportunity to add your own funds to the
funds provided by NRMA, in order to expand the eco-home make-over package.
For example, if you add some of your own funds this may be an opportunity
to install a grid-connected photo-voltaic system.
Selection Process
Once we have received the entries, we will short-list a number of potential
winners, and the NCCAG team will arrange a time to come and meet you and
view your home. After we have visited the short-listed homes, we will notify
the winner in early October.
Timeline for Installation
We hope to work with you, to develop the eco-home make-over package, and install the package during the months of October 2008 to the end of February 2009. The end of February is not a strict deadline, but we would like to complete the installation by this date.

For the cost of one phone call to an energy supplier (Origin Energy has the highest rating with environmental groups) you can buy GreenPower for your home for the cost of 1-2 cappuccinos per week.
When you reduce your consumption through smart use of power your bill may even reduce as your power usage comes down.
We need to do both, sign up for GreenPower and reduce our electricity consumption.
