Sustainable Streets Project - Mullumbimby

NCCAG's Sustainable Streets Project kicked off in October 2008 with the selection of winners for the Eco Home sustainability make-over competition.
Sharon and Jane's suburban home in Stuart Street Mullumbimby, was chosen as the first household to have their eco-footprint calculated and undergo an 'Eco Home Makeover' to help reduce their ecological impact.
According to WWF Living Planet Report 2006, the average
Australian's ecological footprint is 6.6 hectares per person, which is 3 times the average global footprint of 2.2 hectares per person.
At the beginning of the project, Jane, Sharon and her two sons had an ecological footprint of 3.7 hectares each, well below the Australian average of 6.6 hectares per person. Much of their suburban block is dedicated to vegetable garden, composting and they have a chook pen to meet their needs. Although they are already living much more sustainably than many of us, it would still take two planets to sustain their household. Try calculating your own footprint using the online calculator.
Thanks to the Sustainable Streets initiative and our many sponsors, the winning household will be reducing their footprint even further with the installation of a solar hot water system, rainwater tank, 2 Kw solar power system, bulk insulation and use of a thermal cooker.
A second family, Mike, Tanya and two-year-old Quin of New City Road, Mullumbimby is a part of the project. Their household, which started with a 4.8 hectare measurement, is also taking steps to lowering their footprint.
