A worldwide shift is gaining momentum – people all across the globe are expressing their concerns on where Climate Change might be leading us. From Ban Ki Moon, head of the United Nations to Barack Obama to eminent NASA scientist, James Hanson. The rash of natural catastrophes: typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis on our current TV screens is alarming. Could Global Warming be linked to these?
The People's Target of 350 ppm
Increasing numbers of eminent people are now saying that we need to set our greenhouse emission targets at 350 parts per million if we are to have a safe climate and we are already over 380ppm. In other words what we need to do is ‘Power Down’. We all know the term, Power Walking and know it has health benefits. Let us all learn to Power Down for the health of the planet.
Saturday 24th October is an international day of action and a lead-up to the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit in December. NCCAG and BCAN, the regional climate groups have organised an informative, fun, picnic day to register local concern and vote with our feet for a target of 350ppm.
So, set aside Saturday 24th October in your diary and come along to the 350 Climate Fair in Missingham Park, Ballina, commencing 10am and running through to 2pm. Feel free to bring a picnic rug and hamper, preferably with re-usable plates and cups etc. Other local food will also be available for purchase.
The Fair will offer a range of interesting options for young and old, with speakers on: the future impacts on seaside communities to tangible local sustainable solutions that all of us can do and a range of informative stalls. On the more fun side you can enter the ‘Standby Sux’ event, the worm farm activity or a host of other activities.
We invite you to join us in voting for the kids art competition - local sustainable solutions - in the People’s Choice Award. Our kids have been invited to tell us what they see as solutions’, said Gayle Russell from NCCAG. For more information on events organised and the day’s program go to www.nccag.org and follow the links to 350 day.
You can bring along your old books and swap at the Book Exchange or join in the 350 human sculpture at 12 noon which will be captured as it happens on webcam. The local Mumbles band and the Peace Choir will provide musical interludes.
To reduce carbon footprints a shuttle bus will run to and fro Byron Shire to Ballina with an affordable five dollars return ticket price for adults. It is anticipated there will be two or three pick up points in the shire. Phone Peter Wadams on 6680 5007 for details.
