Support the Climate Protection BillAugust 2007 – a call to Australia's political leaders from Australian communities To those who care about our changing climate, Australians think that neither Mr Howard nor Mr Rudd have good enough policies to combat climate change. So 2,750 Australians from 22 communities collaborated to write their own 'Climate Protection Bill'. This Bill comprehensively addresses the cause of Australia's spiraling greenhouse gas emissions, and proposes workable solutions to stem these emissions, protecting people and the planet for future generations. We encourage you to add your support to this Bill, and to take it to your local politicians and contesting candidates in the lead-up to the federal election to show you want real action on climate. Add your support online!Go to www.climatemovement.org.au and click on 'Climate Protection - Act Now!' to add your name and support as an individual or (more powerfully) as a group. Take the Bill to your local politician! An email, a personal letter or, even better, a visit to your local MP and
contesting federal election candidates about the Climate Protection Bill
will make it clear that you want strong, legal action from those you elect.
Business Climate Change opportunity16th Mar 2007 – North Coast Climate Action Group, Press release for Byron Shire Echo The ‘Byron Shire Cool Business’ free, energy-efficient lighting offer will now close on Friday 30th March. The offer is as follows: one shop in Byron Bay’s CBD can put in an application to go in the draw to win a free, fit-out with energy-efficient lights – these lights use up to 80% less power than standard globes or halogens. ‘ As air-conditioning and lighting are generally the biggest components of a commercial business’ power bill, this offer represents a great saving. It is a win/win: the business can save money and save greenhouse gas emissions at the same time,’ said Gayle Russell, convenor of the North Coast Climate Action Group (NCCAG). The offer is a joint initiative of NCCAG and Byron Sustainable Ventures Network. Submit your application to NCCAG ‘Cool Business deal’, PO Box 640 Mullumbimby 2482 and state your name, location, type of business, contact details, number and type of existing lights and your interest in applying for this free offer. – Gayle Russell : Convenor, NCCAG Make your vote count16th Mar 2007 – North Coast Climate Action Group, Press release for Byron Shire Echo With Climate Change big on the agenda in many ways we all have an opportunity to cast our vote next Saturday for state politicians and parties who will act, and act decisively on this important issue. North Coast Climate Action Group recently grilled the contenders for the state seat of Ballina, that incorporates Byron Shire. The most decisive reduction targets came from The Greens, John Bailey, then ALP’s Melanie Doriean, and lastly National’s Don Page with no set emission reduction targets. “Our vote in this state election is important for both the lower and upper house. We need to install politicians who have policies and strategies that can really secure a ‘Greenhouse-friendly’ future. We need politicians who recognise we need viable and diverse eco-systems and sustainable practices and a move away from fossil fuels if we are to secure our future and let us not forget, the other creatures we share the planet with”, said Gayle Russell, Convenor, North Coast Climate Action Group. Mark Diesendorf, Director of Sustainability Centre P/L and senior lecturer in Environmental Studies at the University of NSW, is raising some alarm bells with his recent report that the current coal-fired power stations in NSW are being upgraded - in effect one new coal-fired power station capacity being added right now. This, Diesendorf says, is a guaranteed increase in greenhouse gas emissions if this additional capacity is utilised. Diesendorf advocates a renewable energy future. He challenges what he calls the ‘Base Load fallacy’ and categorically states that we could have a mix of renewables that could supply 100% of grid electricity, and that the system could be just as reliable as the dirty, fossil-fuelled system that it replaces. The Business Council on Sustainable Energy supports this position. They state “Base Load means big, inflexible coal-fired power that wastes a lot of electricity” and that “we have gone to great lengths to build a system to accommodate inflexible coal-fired generation and then aimed to fit cleaner, variable technologies, such as wind around them”. They argue for a total reversal of this paradigm i.e., renewables as the Base Load, with fossil fuels being the top-up for the power grid during peak loads as/if needed. NCCAG’s Gayle Russell urges all voters to ‘Vote for the Planet’. Russell asserts, “‘clean coal’ is misnomer, there is really no such thing. Why are we putting taxpayers money into research and development for something that creates more problems than it solves – particularly when we have so many opportunities for clean, renewable technologies that could increasingly and within short-time frames meet our power needs. We need to let the politicians know we want nothing short of a renewable-energy future.” – Gayle Russell : Convenor, NCCAG Grill the Pollies over climate change23rd Feb 2007 – North Coast Climate Action Group, Press release for Byron Shire Echo Byron residents have been treated to an inundation of meetings about climate change recently. These have generally focussed on getting out information about the scale of the problem and what we, as citizens, can all do to help. The tide of community awareness is rising fast. But how well informed are our political leaders and how ready to act? Now we will have a chance to grill the candidates standing for the seat of Ballina (which includes the shires of Ballina and Byron) at next month’s State election about just what they will do to address climate change. North Coast Climate Action Group (NCCAG) has organised a “Meet the Candidates” forum to be held on Saturday, March 10 in the Byron High School auditorium from 2pm to 4pm. Entry is by gold coin donation. Each of the major candidates, John Bailey – Greens, Melanie Doriean – ALP and Don Page – National will each have 15 to 20 minutes to outline their plan for action on this critical issue. This will be followed by an hour for us, the citizens to put questions, ideas and comments to the candidates and hear and evaluate their responses. So if climate change matters to you as a voter, come along and grill the candidates over this hot issue. State government can and must do much if we are to save our skins, let alone our lifestyles, as the planet heats up. NCCAG can be contacted on 6684 2272 on Wednesdays and Thursdays. For those who may not be able to make the Byron event but want to find out more about the practical and important things we can do, Gayle Russell from NCCAG is offering a course through Byron Community College (ACE), “Eco-living & Climate Change: making a difference” over two Saturdays, 10th March and 17th March, 10am – 4pm. Phone ACE on 6684 3374 to book. – Adrian Gattenhof / Gayle Russell : NCCAG
